10 Steps to Finding Yourself After a Loss


Everyone goes through really rough times in their lives. 

Not a single person is immune to sorrow or loss. 

Every human experiences it. 

It’s how we respond that defines who we are.

Sometimes things happen that completely throw all our plans out the window.  They make you question what you are doing with your life or force you to remake something of the pieces that are left.  This could be from a divorce, the death of a loved one, losing everything you own in a natural disaster, finding out you have a disease like diabetes or cancer, a violent assault, leaving an abusive relationship, or even a really bad breakup with a friend or other support system.

Its natural to feel lost.

Adrift.  Like nothing is familiar anymore.  Not only that, when something is familiar, it brings up bad memories and you want to get away from it as quickly as possible.  I was there and I had to dig myself out of that place.

Here are 10 of the things I did to find myself again after a loss.

1.  List the things you loved to do as a kid.

Then go do all those things.  Seriously.


My list?  As a kid

  1. I loved to ride my bike as fast as I could.
  2. I loved completing craft projects.
  3. I loved cats.
  4. I loved camping and visiting national parks.
  5. I loved building stuff.
  6. I loved exploring nature.
  7. I loved building forts.
  8. I loved helping people.
  9. I loved health and wellness.
  10. I loved photography.
  11. I loved writing in my journal.
  12. I loved writing stories.
  13. I loved learning new things.
  14. I loved swimming.
  15. I loved anything and everything French.
  16. I loved yoga.
  17. I loved listening to the birds and the sound of the wind in the trees.
  18. I loved being alone.
  19. I loved riding horses.
  20. I loved karate.
  21. I loved having my own at home spa days.
  22. I loved going to the beach in Ventura.
  23. I loved rock collecting in the desert.
  24. I loved to cook with my dad.
  25. I loved to draw and paint.

When I started thinking about reconnecting with myself, I started thinking about what gave me joy as a child.  Children are carefree.  They do what they enjoy naturally without thinking about opinions.  You must connect to that inner childish spirit that wants to dance and explore.  Do the things you used to love.  I bet you will find out that many of these things still bring you immense joy.  Challenge yourself to do each of them at least once in the next year.

2.  Remove negative people from your life.

This is so so important.  You need to make a list of every person you talk to on a regular basis and slowly and carefully evaluate your relationship with that person.  I am talking everyone.  Relatives, friends, neighbors, boss, spouse, even your individual children.

Analyze your interactions with these people.

Ask yourself how you feel after a few hours with them.

  1. Do you feel moody and exhausted?
  2. Do you feel inspired and energized?
  3. Does this person make you feel loved?
  4. Do they encourage you to follow your interests and passions?
  5. Or do they put you down?
  6. Or tell you that you will not succeed?
  7. Are any of these people involved with things that are against your morals and values?
  8. Do these people truly align with who you want to be?
  9. Are you proud or embarrassed to be associated with them?

After evaluating each relationship, start adjusting the amount of time you spend with people.  Spend less time with those who drain you, and more time with those who energize and inspire you.  You may even have to cut people off completely.  Be ruthless.  This is difficult, but until you do this you will not be able to focus on living a happy and fulfilled life.

A note on relatives.  I had to cut contact or limit contact with a couple relatives that were constantly dragging me down and making me second guess my decisions.  It made it very difficult to live a life that made me happy.  It wasn’t until I removed those influences from my life that I finally found the strength to follow my passions.  On the flip side, I started reconnecting with relatives I enjoyed spending time with as a child and now have some wonderfully fulfilling new relationships.

A note on your children.  Obviously, if your child is under 18 you cannot cut them out of your life and you shouldn’t want to.  If you are having trouble connecting to your child I suggest learning more about who they are.  Learn what they are interested in, what they like to do, what they want to do, where they want to go.  Be a partner in helping them to create their best life and your relationship with naturally grow stronger.


3.  Fill your space with uplifting and inspiring talk.

I am so thankful for Youtubers!  During the hardest times, I relied heavily on YouTube videos about positive thinking, attracting wellness, banishing negativity, living your best life, the Law of Attraction, setting and meeting goals, the habits of successful people, ways to manage stress and so on.  I basically used YouTube to retrain my thinking to be more positive, focused and goal oriented.  I also began spending more time with those people from list #2 who brought me joy and made a positive impact on my life.  I’ll link a few of my favorite channels below.

4.  Write Morning Pages.

Morning pages is a concept that comes from my stepdad’s favorite book, The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron.


We have so many thoughts that take up space in our minds at all times of the day and night.  Many times, these thoughts keep us from creating, sleeping, taking risks, and even pursuing our dreams.

Morning pages are the cure.  They are three handwritten pages, about 750 words, written every day, preferably in the early morning when its quiet and you have time to mentally prepare for your day.  Don’t like to wake up early?  Don’t worry I have a post coming for that soon!

There are no rules for your three pages.  Just that you have to write at least 750 words.  I suggest writing down the things that have been nagging you.  Your schedule for the day.  A to-do list.  Things you are worried about.  An event that upset you or was joyful.  Plans for the future.  A short story.  It doesn’t matter.  As long as you get whats clogging up your head onto the paper.  You can even burn it after you write it.  I know a few people that do this while they visualize their problems being solved.

Morning pages help clear your head and keep you focused on your day.

5.  Clear out the old to make way for the new.

There is an old saying that some doors close so others may open and I believe this wholeheartedly.  I also believe that it is difficult to move forward when our thoughts, surroundings, and energies are stuck in the past.  This can happen when we surround ourselves with too much stuff.  When we hang on to things that we do not love or use.

When our homes are full to the brim of old, broken, unused stuff we cannot bring anything new and useful into our lives.

Look into minimalism and start clearing out the clutter.  You will quickly find that you feel more energized in your home when it’s clean and clear of clutter.  Your space can breathe.  You and your home will feel more alive!

6.  Make a Pinterest board… or ten of them!


I absolutely love Pinterest!  It has been a crucial tool in helping me find who I am and what makes my heart and soul sing.

Through creating Pinterest boards I have defined all aspects of my personal style, from my home to my art.

Create your own set boards that define what you love.  Every time you see an image of something you love, a quote, a place, a person, an animal, an outfit, a home interior, pin it to your style board.  Eventually, you will start to see a trend in your board.  You will start to see what you love and what you don’t.

Branch out and start creating boards for your clothes, home, and career.  Over time you will learn what makes your heart go aflutter and this will keep you from spending money unnecessarily on things you don’t need or really want.

7.  Get a handle on your finances.


According to Time Magazine, the average American under 35 has $67,400 of debt!  By age 44 this number jumps to $133,100!  That is a lot of debt!

Owing so much money to debtors that you are living paycheck to paycheck, or worse, living off credit, can make anyone feel lost and hopeless.

You must get a handle on your finances if you are ever to find lasting joy and fulfillment.

It took about 6 years before I paid off all my debts except my student loans, which I am still accruing.  You must take the time to learn how to manage your money and pay down your debt.

I have loved Dave Ramsey’s baby steps from the very first time I read his book.  You can find more information about the baby steps on his website.  He will help you make a budget, get your debts organized and develop a plan to pay them down, even if you don’t have enough money to pay what you owe each month.

8.  Get back to nature.

Natural places have incredible healing power.  Spending time in beautiful places helps calm your body and your spirit.  Its even scientifically proven that beautiful natural spaces have a unique energy that is incredibly healing.  If you are feeling overwhelmed and stressed go to a local park, a natural wildlife preserve, or a forest, lake or beach.  Focus on relaxing your body and allowing your worries to drain away, just for this moment.  The more time you spend in nature the healthier you will become.

9.  Eat good food.  Get enough sleep.  Get some exercise.  Drink plenty of water.  Take your vitamins.  Go see your doctor and dentist.

When we get depressed or experience loss or hardship, we often stop taking care of our bodies.  We eat more fast food, we stop taking long walks with the kids, we forget to take our vitamins, we forget to get health checkups, we start drinking more coffee and less water.  We stay up late worrying about things we cannot control.

This is the worst thing you can do to your body during times of stress.  When you are under stress you need to make sure you are staying on top of these essential things.  This is the basis for health and wellness.  If we are not healthy, we cannot put everything we have toward reaching our goals.



10. Set a goal.  Make a plan.  Take action.

Realize that you can make nearly anything happen if you put your mind to it.  Make a plan, but don’t stop there.  You must take action.  You must take small steps toward your goals every day.

Backward design is a concept I learned in teaching and here I am applying it to creating the life you want.  Basically, you start with your goal and work backward from the goal to figure out the steps it took to get there.

For example, I want to make $100,000 a year on my own within the next 3 years.  Let us imagine I am already making $100k per year.  How did I do this?  Well, I have my teaching job, which covers about half that before taxes and Ill get a raise when I finish my credential program.  I also do photography, and collect a frappuccino’s worth of dividends from my investments each month, so how am I going to make an extra $50k a year?  Well, I made a list of course!  I can write, take pictures, teach, and do art.  I have specialized training in mindfulness, meditation, Law of Attraction, goal setting, making videos and much more.  I love blogging and YouTube and teaching others things to better their lives, so I am going to combine those things to make that $50k.  I am going to write on my blog, start selling some of the photos I have taken, start writing articles and ebooks to sell, offer my services to restaurants for food photography and so much more!

Now it’s your turn.  What is your goal and how are you going to get there.  Make your steps.  Make steps for your steps and check at least one thing off your list every day.

It’s so important to take it one small step at a time and do it every day.  Just 20 minutes a day will add up to incredible change in your life!


Finally, give yourself time and have patience.

It takes time to heal from a loss.  Give yourself that time, but don’t get lost in it.  Make sure you are taking care of yourself and when you are ready, start following the above steps, in whatever order you deem necessary for your situation.  I hope they help you as much as they helped me.


Oven Braised Chicken with Tomato and Olive Sauce


Happy Autumn Equinox!

Mother Earth decided to bless us by sending our first real Fall day.  The temperature dropped from the upper 90s down to 72 and breezy in just a couple days.  The wind smelled wet and cold.  It blew strongest in the afternoon and the dust was so thick in places that visibility was down to about 10 feet.

I got the kids home by about 3:15pm and quickly decided against going swimming at the YMCA.  I just wanted to huddle in my apartment with a book and something warm to eat.  I was too tired to stand at the stove cooking so I opted to throw something together in the oven.


I pulled out a large oven safe pot.  Tossed in some chicken thighs, which were a steal this week at Albertsons for $0.69/lb!  I dumped a packet of Red Fork Foods Tomato Olive Chicken Skillet Sauce in there as well as a little water.  I popped that in the oven for a bit while I cooked some brown rice.  In the end we had a fabulous meal that took less than 15 minutes of prep and was done in under an hour while I read a book and watched my son play outside with his trucks.


Oven Braised Chicken with Tomato and Olive Sauce

Serves 4-5


  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.  Lightly coat the bottom of a large oven safe pot with olive oil.  Place chicken inside pot in a single layer.  Don’t make them too tightly packed.
  2. Season with salt & pepper and pour the tomato packet over the chicken.  Pour in enough water so the chicken is submerged halfway in liquid.
  3. Put the pot in the oven uncovered for 45 minutes.
  4. Check to make sure the chicken is at least 165-170 degrees F or cut one open and make sure it is not pink inside and the juices run clear.
  5. Serve with rice and some of the cooking sauce from the pot.

Heirloom Tomato Salad with Goat Cheese


I woke up in the middle of the night freezing cold.  Even though I had a fuzzy warm blanket and my son snuggled up next to me, it wasn’t enough to keep me warm.  I managed to sleep the rest of the night, but first thing this morning, before I even made coffee, I lit the pilot light on our heater and cranked that puppy up to 75.


The first day of Fall is Thursday and I am taking every advantage of the last of Summer’s heirloom tomatoes.  Trader Joes had a big basket of them for $2.99 so I bought a bunch of them and made a fantastic & fast Heirloom Tomato Salad.  I ended up using this salad all week!   I put it on sandwiches, on pasta, on top of fried polenta with a little goat cheddar melted over the top.  Then I ate the last of it right out of the bowl!

Heirloom Tomato Salad

  • 2-3 large heirloom tomatoes
  • 1/8 cup of Italian Dressing
  • salt & pepper
  • goat chevre
  • basil leaves
  1.  Slice tomatoes into cubes and place in a collander over another bowl to allow juices to drain free.  Allow to drain for a few minutes then discard juice or use for smoothies or tomato sauce.  Season with salt and pepper.
  2. Gently toss tomatoes in a large bowl with Italian Dressing.  Sprinkle with goat cheese, basil and pepper.

Breakfast Tacos

Are you feeling those first stirrings of Fall yet?  I know I have been for a couple of weeks now.  The nights are much cooler.  My bedroom windows are still open at night, but only a crack.  The evenings are still very warm but I have pulled out the warmer blankets for the middle of the night when the temperature outside finally drops.  I have even had to wear my hoodie a couple of times!

This morning I woke up early looking for my fuzzy blanket.  The window had been left wide open and the air in the house was chill and smelled of dew and wildfire.  The red sunrise that has been our constant companion thanks to this Summer’s voracious fire season cast a red-orange glow across the bedroom walls.  A smokey haze blankets the horizons in every direction.  Even our afternoon winds, which show up almost everyday around 4pm, do nothing to wash away the haze.

For some reason we were all starving this morning and everyone wanted a big breakfast early.  Usually I have more time on Sundays to prep for breakfast, but I needed something quick and filling today.  Breakfast tacos were just the thing.  They are super fast and can be made with eggs, tortillas and whatever leftover meats and veggies you have in the fridge.  I happened to have a summer squash, some avocado and a tub of baby tomatoes that needed to be eaten.    You could use almost anything.  Curried potatoes or yams, smashed beans, asparagus and goat cheese.  The combinations are endless.


Breakfast Tacos

Amounts are per person

  • 2 small corn tortillas
  • 1/2 an avocado
  • 1 summer squash
  • 6 baby tomatoes
  • 2 eggs
  • salt and pepper
  • sprinkle of cumin
  • fresh cilantro
  • olive oil

Dice the summer squash into small cubes about 1/2 inch square.  Heat a large skillet on medium heat until just hot.  Pour a dollop of olive oil in the pan and spread around with a spatula until the bottom is covered and the oil is hot, but not smoking.  Dump in the squash and spread to cover the bottom of the pan.  Sprinkle lightly with salt and cumin.  Cook on medium heat without stirring for about 3 minutes.  With a spatula gently stir the squash and cook another 3-5 minutes until they are firm but tender.  Dump the squash onto a clean cotton or paper towel (to absorb the extra oil) and set aside.

Set the pan aside for a minute and warm the tortillas on the burner if you are using a gas stove.  If you have an electric stove warm them in a pan with no or very little oil.  Set the warm tortillas on a plate.

Place the pan back on medium heat and add a little more oil if necessary.  There should not be very much.  Just enough to gloss the bottom of the pan so the eggs don’t stick.  When the pan is hot crack two eggs into the pan.  They should begin bubbling and cooking right away.  If they don’t then your pan was not hot enough.  Without touching them, cook the eggs on medium heat for a minute, then turn down the heat to low and cover the pan with a glass lid (preferably).  Cook the eggs gently until the white film over the yolk has stiffened slightly, but the yolk is still runny.

While the eggs cook, fill each tortilla with half the squash mixture, slice the avocado and the tomatoes and set aside.  When the eggs are done cooking, carefully remove each egg and place inside a taco.  Sprinkle with salt and pepper, top with avocado, tomato, and cilantro (I forgot to buy some).  I would have loved to add a spoonful of salsa or a squiggle of Tapatío, but I was all out!  Enjoy!


Going Gluten Free – My Story


*This is going to be long, but its necessary to tell the whole thing.  I relied heavily on stories people told online to pinpoint my symptoms and eventually come up with a cure, so here is my story.  I hope it helps someone out there.

I wake up at 6 am, still exhausted from the relatively sleepless night before.  The sky is dark, with the slightest hint that a brilliant light is hidden behind the eastern horizon.  I sit up, stretch and head to the bathroom.  The bathroom, a place I dread every morning.  The bathroom is where I usually spend the first hour or three of my mornings.  Either on the toilet or trying not to throw up the bitter bile that inevitably will haunt me throughout the day.  After a couple hours, and a few forced bites of saltine crackers I pull my head up off the bathroom counter look in the mirror.  My skin is red and blotchy.  Dark circles rim my eyes.  I make a half-hearted attempt to cover up the nickle sized cystic acne on my chin and nose.  Weren’t these monster zits supposed to be gone by the time I left greasy face teenagerhood?  I guess not.

I skip breakfast, the nausea is still too strong as I start getting ready for work.  Thankfully I work the late shift today giving me plenty of time to recover enough to face people.  I’ve mastered the art of looking normal, even happy, on the outside all the while feeling close to vomiting all over my bosses new shoes.  By 1pm I am forced to eat something.  The battle raging in my stomach between my nausea and my hunger has reached a tipping point.  Eat now or the nausea will turn into vertigo.  As usual, I turn to the easiest thing to get down, sugary breads and chocolate.  By evening the nausea has been replaced by a roaring sinus headache.  It spreads across my forehead and behind my eyes.  I eat a healthy dinner, put my children to bed, pop two extra strength Ibuprofen and attempt to fight the ever present insomnia that haunts my nights.

Pretty awful isn’t it?  I can’t believe I lived that way for over 20 years!  I was 9 years old the first time I remember telling the doctor I was always nauseous.  Over the years doctors have told me that I must be pregnant, I am too stressed, I have GERD, I have acid-reflux, I have IBS, its anxiety, and on an on.  They all have a pill for me to take.  None of them ever worked.  Some of the pills even made my symptoms worse.  Eventually I gave up.  I decided that I was probably going to have to live with this forever.

Then a few years ago when my son was born I was nursing exclusively.  I ended up going on the elimination diet because he had a ton of food allergies that were causing severe excema.  He couldn’t sleep, he had colic, he was fussy.  I wrote a post or two about this at the time.  Anyway, so many of my own symptoms improved when I was on that diet that I decided it must be the dairy.  I completely eliminated dairy from my diet.  Suddenly my migraines were gone, my acne was vastly improved, my vomiting was considerable less and I lost 10 pounds without even trying.  But, I still had many of my symptoms and it would take another 3 years before I found out the cause.

Almost a month ago, I finally decided enough was enough.  I was sick of being sick.  I finally had great health insurance and I was going to figure this out once and for all.  I decided that instead of going on the elimination diet again I would just eliminate the most scientifically problematic foods.  Dairy and gluten were at the top of that list.  So, gluten was the first to go.

I do want to mention that I did head to my doctor, who promptly refused to get a food allergy test done and instead diagnosed me with anxiety and gave me another pill.  Hmmm….

I woke up on the 3rd day of going gluten free and realized that for the first time in over 20 years I did not feel nauseous!  Not one bit!  Not even a whisper.  I was so shocked and overjoyed I literally leaped out of bed and did a dance around my bedroom.  The entire day I was overcome by the fact that didn’t feel sick.  I actually wanted to eat breakfast.  I was able to eat a healthy lunch.  I didn’t need to start every meal with something sugary.  After the first week my skin was clearer, my nausea and other tummy troubles were gone, my bad breath was better, I hadn’t had a headache at all that week and I was sleeping like a rock.

Its been a month now and I will never go back to gluten.  I don’t even mind.  I am so thrilled to not be sick everyday that giving up gluten is a walk in the park.  I have found lots of great alternatives to wheat products and on top of that I have lost another 10 pounds and 2 dress sizes!  I even decreased the amount of exercise I did that month!  I feel amazing.  My anxiety is better, my sleep is better, my skin is beautiful (no breakouts since going GF), no nausea, no vomiting, its amazing that a food caused all that illness.

I have had some rude comments by others however when I have to refuse an offer of food or I tell someone about going gluten free.  Some people have called me a hippie or said I am just following a trend.  Some say that the only people who have to eliminate gluten are those with Celiacs.  I even heard one of my favorite morning radio shows poking fun at people who eat gluten free.  They say they are ridiculous.  Making it up.  Looking for attention.  I just look those people in the eye and say, “I was sick everyday for 20 years.  3 days after I stopped eating gluten my symptoms disappeared.  When you can explain that to me then you are welcome to call me whatever you want.”

I hope my story has inspired others to take their health into their own hands.  Don’t let doctors tell you nothing is wrong or that they don’t know what to do.  Keep searching for answers, keep investigating.  Pay attention to your body and how it reacts to food.  I have done hours upon hours of research over years and years to solve this problem.  The only reason I figured it out is because of the media and internet interest in gluten issues.  I promise that if you don’t give up you will eventually find answers.

Since I’ve Been Gone


Here I sit.  In my newish apartment overlooking the Southern California desert where we now call home.  I have been wanting to write this post for months, but the right words have eluded me.  How do I explain all that has happened to our little family over the last two years.  All the struggle, the sorrow, the anger, the hopelessness, and yes even the occasional joy.  Those things are so difficult to talk about that I almost want to push those experiences to the deepest recesses of my mind and forget they ever happened.  But I can’t do that.  We learn the most important lessons during our greatest hardships and the lessons I have learned in the past year are ones I will hold the closest to my heart forevermore.


One of those lessons has been to not let go of those things that make me who I am.  I am still a passionate cook and writer.  I still love to take photos.  I love to teach and share my knowledge with others who are as enthusiastic about my passions as I am.  I love intelligent conversation and the sharing of ideas and goals.  I love making new friends, in person and across the internet.  So, because I love all those things and since they are still an integral part of who I am I have returned to continue writing my blog.  To continue sharing all the wonderful foods I create.  The interesting things I discover.  The ideas I have to share.


I can see from my blog’s stats that over the last year that my readership has actually increased, and in some cases almost doubled!  So many people still come visit my little corner of the internet even though I haven’t written in over a year!  That is so mind blowing to me.  That even though I wasn’t writing, people still valued what I had said before.  This realization was the final piece I needed to get back to blogging.  So here I am.  I’m back and ready to take on the world.

So, I know what you are thinking.  What the hell happened?

Well, I’m actually not going to get into it.  It’s so shockingly awful that I’ve been told several times to write a book about my experiences.  Maybe one day, but today will not be the day I start.  To make an epic story as short as possible, all I will say is that in one way or another I lost most of those I loved in the past 2 years.  My parents, siblings, husband, and several friends including my oldest and dearest friend.


All is not so sad however.  In the last 6 months things have dramatically improved.  I scored a job, no actually a career, that I absolutely love.  I was even promoted this month!  I scored an apartment I love.  I solved a lifelong debilitating health issue by adjusting my diet (more on that in my next post).  I lost quite a bit of weight and finally feel healthy again.  My children are safe and happy.  My daughter is back to getting straight As and my son always has his adorably mischievous smile on his face.  I am no longer sliding further and further into debt.  Actually I am as close to being debt free as I have ever been!  I am immensely stronger on the inside than I have ever been before.  I know who I am, what I want, and what I do not want.  I am not afraid.  I’ve learned that my struggles have made me so strong and I’ve learned that sometimes its okay to tell people to fuck off.  I love the person I have rediscovered myself to be and I hope my readers do too.

Coming Back


It’s almost midnight and I am enjoying the quiet of my living room with a beer trying to figure out what to write after a year and a half of almost zero blogging.  For a time I had switched over to a self hosted blog, but that didn’t work out like I had hoped, then things went completely haywire and I had to take a step back from blogging completely to focus on rebuilding my life.  Today my life is completely different than the one I had when I wrote my last post.  I don’t want to get into the details too much since they are far too personal and there is a lot of pain associated with them.  However, there are a two things that I feel my readers need to be updated on, since these things were such a presence in my blog before.

First, Tom and I separated at the beginning of this year.  We were having a lot of problems over the last couple years and decided that perhaps a break would be beneficial.  I think it has been and we are getting along great, working together and starting to make tentative plans to be a family again.

Second, we temporarily moved back to southern California, which in the end turned into a massive disaster, but that also is getting better and we are planning to move back north as soon as humanly possible.

Brae and Gavin are doing great.  Brae is almost 11 and in 5th grade this year!  Gavin will be turning 3 in October and is a wild carefree sweetheart.  They will be a bigger part of my blog than before since much of my cooking is done with them in mind.

I will not be posting often, maybe once a week and mostly recipes.  I was shocked to see how many people still visit this blog everyday which I am so very happy about.  I miss blogging so much and am excited to get back into it.

Life in Black and White- March

Has it been a month already!?!

This past month has been incredibly stressful with visitors, car troubles, illness, baby sleep troubles and so much more.  I hope to get back to blogging regularly soon.

The rainy season has finally hit us and with it comes incredible cloud formations.  I caught these yesterday.
